New Mail Distribution System

To maximize cost savings in the current budget situation, effective January 5, 2009, Mail Services has implemented changes in the mail distribution system. We have discontinued the current method of delivering mail to each building. We have identified central mail locations (Wilder Tower, Admin Annex, Richardson Towers Post Office and Print Services) and each department will now be responsible for picking up and delivering its mail from an assigned location. The Library will continue to receive its mail due to their large daily volume.

Any department that is already receiving mail at Wilder Tower or Admin Annex will not be impacted. Most departments North of the tracks will receive mail at Richardson Towers Post Office. Departments South of the tracks and those located along the tracks will pick up their mail at Print Services Building on Southern. This includes all departments on the Park Avenue Campus.

Mail will be ready for pick up and drop off from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the designated locations. Departments need to identify the person(s) responsible for the mail pick up for its department or building. Mail Services will require them to show their ID and to print and sign their name indicating pick up each day. If driving is necessary, departments assigned to pick up mail at Print Services Building can park in the fenced loading dock area next to the building. For departments assigned to Richardson Towers, parking is available with a departmental hangtag in the Richardson Tower lot, Business Lot 37 or at a meter in the Information Center lot if a space is available. We will continue to work on this plan to create more convenient locations in the future as we are allowed to backfill positions. In the meantime, to help reduce the volume of mail received, please do not have any personal mail sent to the University and cancel unused or unsolicited catalogs, periodicals, etc. If you need to receive personal mail delivered to the University, you can rent a mailbox at the Richardson Towers Post Office for $44 per year. For additional information, read more about our Post Office Box Rental Program.

We greatly appreciate everyone’s understanding and patience through this transition. If you have any questions about your department’s mail delivery, please contact Sandy Barksdale at x4568 or email sbarksdl@memphis.edu.
