Official University Address Format

  1. For USPS addressing purposes (including addresses used by package delivery services), the last four lines of the address should be as follows: 

    The University of Memphis
    Department Name
    Delivery Address;
    City State Zip+4

    The name of an individual or any other addressing lines - if any - should go above the four lines shown above. University Mail Services delivers only to departments, not to individuals.

  2. Department Names: the list of official addresses contains ALL the permissible department names and one of these names must be used. If a mailer does not know the proper department name it is likely that University Mail Services will not know either. The list may contain more than one style of a department’s name; any listing may be used. Those names shown with a “P” are “Primary” names; this is the official department or unit name. Those shown with an “S” are “Secondary” names and may be a shorter version of the name or an approved alternative name.

  3. Delivery Address: the exact numbers and names must be used as shown on the lists, including exactly how names are abbreviated or presented. The number must always precede the name.

  4. For campus mail sent from one University department to another, mail addressed only to one of the department names exactly as shown on the official list is considered adequately addressed and will be delivered. It is recommended that the “Delivery Address” of the department also be included where possible. The name of an individual or other addressing information should be placed above the department name and delivery address.
