Explanation of the Cross-Reference List

NOTE: Only an official primary or secondary name should be used when addressing mail to a University department of activity. The inclusion on the cross-reference list of other names does NOT imply that those are acceptable address names.

Purpose: This list is intended to provide a reference to help identify the correct, assigned Primary Department Name (or the correct styling of the unit name) or secondary name to which mail should be addressed or delivered. The list will be used by two groups:

  • It will be used by those outside University Mail Services to help identify the correct department name to which mail should be addressed.
  • It will be used by University Mail Services to help identify the department to which incorrectly addressed mail should be delivered.

The list is comprised of unit names, activities, abbreviations, etc., that have been used to identify a unit or that might reasonable be used in efforts to identify the correct unit name. The list also includes approved Primary and Secondary department names.

Names to be cross-referenced: These were taken from items submitted by units, from former names to which mail is still addressed, and from other names noted by Mail Services. Only those names that might be useful for identifying a mail address were listed.

Type: Primary Department Names are shown with “Primary.” Secondary Department Names are shownwith “Secondary.” Other entries are those shown with “Cross Ref.”

Approved department name: This is the Primary Department Name to which mail for the former name, abbreviation, etc., should be addressed. For Secondary Department Names, the Primary Department Name is listed. After the correct department name is identified, refer to the “Official University Address List” for the full address.

Nature: This is a general reference to the nature of the cross-reference item. There is no significance tothese categories other than to help explain why the item was listed. These include the following:

  • Former Name: these are former names by which a unit has been known
  • Program: these are programs, activities, or sub-units within a department
  • Abbreviation: these are abbreviations or acronyms sometimes used for a unit
  • Alternate Names: these are other forms of the unit name

Additions or changes to this list: Any interested person may submit suggestions for changes or additions to this list to the manager of Mail Services.
