Personal Safety Alerts

October 14, 2009

The University of Memphis Police Department is issuing this message in an effort to continue to ensure the safety of our students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

On Tuesday, October 13th, 2009, around 9:45 PM, two male students were robbed in the area of Midland and Brister. The students were walking and were approached by two males who demanded money; one of the males was armed with a silver handgun. The students complied by surrendering their wallets, and were not harmed. The male suspects then left the area quickly in a silver, mid-sized vehicle, driving westbound on Midland toward Highland.

The male suspects were described by the students as:

#1: African-American male, age 20-25, 5’8”-5’10”, 160 lbs., medium build, short “buzz” haircut, medium complexion with possibly a light goatee, wearing a navy or black hoodie, blue jeans, and dark shoes. The students reported he was armed with a silver pistol.

#2: African-American male, taller and bigger than suspect #1, wearing a dark hoodie and blue jeans. He was possibly the driver of the vehicle.

Police Services is working closely with the Memphis Police Department to investigate these cases. The University Police will continue to focus more patrols in the area. You are encouraged to use additional caution when out at night, and to always be aware of your surroundings.
